PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Ceylon tea origin dates back to circa 1824 when the first tea plant was brought by the British to Ceylon from China, and planted in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, Kandy. Ceylon was originally cultivated as the first non-commercial crop in Sri Lanka, and enjoyed this status for a period of 20 years, until when it was commercialized in 1867 through the Scotsman, James Taylor. During that period coffee was suffering a downturn in cultivation in the region, due to a disease which wiped out most of the crop. As a result of this, coffee farmers moved over to tea as a commercial alternative to coffee. Nearly two centuries after this revolutionary event, tea production in Sri Lanka has burgeoned significantly, with all coffee plantations been converted to tea regions. Today, pure Ceylon black tea from Sri Lanka is regarded as the finest and best tea to buy in Sri Lanka, and, in fact, across the world.
Ceylon is obtained from the camellia sinensis plant, and primarily grown in 11 tea regions in Sri Lanka, of which the 3 most well-known are Uva, Nuwara Eliya, and?Dimbulla. Uva?is perhaps the most famous?tea-growing region in Sri Lanka; the?terroir?of Uva produces?black tea?with a uniquely fine flavor and exotic aroma. Nuwara Eliya, the highest elevation?tea region in Sri Lanka, produces tea that possesses a gentle, floral aroma and mild,?brisk?flavor. Dimbulla is the southernmost of the three well-known regions. While some Dimbulla teas are full-bodied, and others are delicate, they are mostly mellow in flavor.
Of particular interest to most people who consume the tea in contemporary times is the Dilmah Ceylon tea brand, which is considered the 6th largest tea brands in the world. Dilmah tea prices depend largely on particular Dilmah tea flavours and package content.
