A Cardamom Powder history:

Due to poor worldwide weather conditions induced by climate change, cardamom crops are in limited supply. The restricted supply continues to push up the price of this popular seasoning, but we will continue to monitor the market and modify our pricing appropriately.

Our organic cardamom powder is an exceptionally fragrant seasoning. Elettaria cardamomum is often added to coffee and used in baking and curry recipes. Cardamom powder has a rich taste with spicy, lemony, and herbal undertones.

The fruit of a tropical plant related to ginger, cardamom is a member of the Zingiberaceae family and one of the world’s most costly spices after saffron and vanilla. Cardamom cultivation is incredibly labor-intensive. On farms in Guatemala or India, the tall plants bloom for eight or nine months every year. Each pod or capsule ripens gradually and must be harvested when it reaches three-quarters maturity.

Following collection, the pods are cleaned and dried. The manner of drying determines the final hue. White signifies that the pods have been dried in the sun for many days, leaving them bleached. Green pods have been dried in a heated room for one day and night. The three seeds contained inside each pod constitute the spice.

Cardamom is vital to Middle Eastern and Scandinavian cuisines. Gahwa, or cardamom coffee, is a hallmark of Arab hospitality. In Norway, cardamom is used to flavor ground meat, whereas in Sweden it is used to flavor baked foods. Worldwide, cardamom is used with cloves and cinnamon. Chai receives its characteristic taste from cardamom.

Cardamom was regarded as the “Queen of Spices” in India, while black pepper was known as the “King of Spices.” Also, in India around the eleventh century, the Book of Splendor lists it as one of the components in “Five scent betel chew.” Cardamom oil is used to flavor medications and as a fragrance ingredient in soaps, detergents, perfumes, and other body care items.

For simplicity of use in culinary recipes, infusions, and extracts, our cardamom powder is ground from dried, hulled seeds.
